Localized fast flow disturbance observed in the plasma sheet

چکیده

An isolated plasma sheet flow burst took place at 22:02 UT, 1 September 2002, when the Cluster footpoint was located within the area covered by the Magnetometers-Ionospheric Radars-All-sky Cameras Large Experiment (MIRACLE). The event was associated with a clear but weak ionospheric disturbance and took place during a steady southward IMF interval, about 1 h preceding a major substorm onset. Multipoint observations, both in space and from the ground, allow us to discuss the temporal and spatial scale of the disturbance both in the magnetosphere and ionosphere. Based on measurements from four Cluster spacecraft it is inferred that Cluster observed the dusk side part of a localized flow channel in the plasma sheet with a flow shear at the front, suggesting a field-aligned current out from the ionosphere. In the ionosphere the equivalent current pattern and possible field-aligned current location show a pattern similar to the auroral streamers previously obtained during an active period, except for its spatial scale and amplitude. It is inferred that the footpoint of Cluster was located in the region of an upward field-aligned current, consistent with the magnetospheric observations. The entire disturbance in the ionosphere lasted about 10 min, consistent with the time scale of the current sheet disturbance in the magnetosphere. The plasma sheet bulk flow, on the other hand, had a time scale of about 2 min, corresponding to the time scale of an equatorward excursion of the enhanced electrojet. These observations confirm that localized enhanced convection in the magnetosphere and associated changes in the current sheet structure produce a signature with consistent temporal and spatial scale at the conjugate ionosphere. On Interaction of T S Waves and 3 D Localized Disturbance in a Divergent Flow Under Zero Pressure Gradient

To simulate the effect of free st ream turbulence on turbulent spot formation, experiments were conducted on the interaction of localized three-dimensional disturbances with the harmonic waves in a laminar boundary layer on a flat plate. Experiments conducted in three-dimensional diverging flow (but zero pressure gradient) show, while individually the disturbances decay downstream, their intera...

Propagation of Alfvén Waves at the Plasma Sheet Boundary Layer

Recently, observations from the Polar and Cluster satellites have indicated that largeamplitude kinetic Alfvén waves are observed throughout the plasma sheet, particularly at the plasma sheet boundary layers, during substorms. These waves may be directly produced by reconnection processes in the tail, or indirectly through linear or nonlinear mode conversion or by localized plasma flows in the ...

Enhanced transport across entire length of plasma sheet boundary field lines leading to substorm onset

[1] Recently, images from the THEMIS all‐sky imager array were used to suggest that longitudinally localized enhanced plasma transport across the nightside open‐closed boundary (separatrix) ∼5.5 min before substorm onset leads to intrusion of new plasma toward the near‐Earth plasma sheet and to substorm onset via near‐Earth instability. If such reconnection‐related flow enhancements precede sub...

Ion heat flux and energy transport near the magnetotail neutral sheet

[1] Ten-year averages of energy transport rates near the neutral sheet showed that the enthalpy flux density or thermal energy term QT = (5/2)PV was the largest, where P is the isotropic pressure and V is the bulk flow velocity. The ion heat flux, qi, was the next largest term. Sorting data using a magnetic flux transport parameter showed that qi could become dominant during periods of slow flo...
